To describe Susan Grahamโ€™s presence as โ€˜commandingโ€™ is an understatement. Often literally towering over everyone else on the operatic stage, the tall Texan mezzo has a one-in-a-million voice. Flawlessly traversing the repertoire from baroque to contemporary (โ€˜finest living interpreterโ€™ is an epithet that has been applied to everything from Purcellโ€™s Dido to the songs of Berlioz and Mahler),she is the kind of singer that new operas are created around (Jake Heggie wrote Sister Helen for her in Dead Man Walking) and can pull off peppering her set lists with Cole Porter or Sondheim with characteristic authority and wit. As a recital artist she is renowned for her intelligent programming and this generous set of songs is her best and her personal favourite. Schumannโ€™s Frauenliebe und Leben is one of those works in danger of disappearing from concert halls because the timeless beauty of its music is becoming overshadowed by its seemingly dated text. By dividing up the eight Lieder and exploring the themes of each via a staggering variety of interspersed songs (Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Berlioz, Granados, Debussy, Faurรฉ, Duparc, Poulenc) we listen to the cycle afresh and its explorations of love, sex, kids and grief become genuinely universal.

Aussie icon Shannon Noll will be back on the road to promote his new album, Unbroken. Unbroken was released on Warner Music Australia on this February and is Shannonโ€™s first new album in seven years. Unbroken is an album of reflection and conviction, the former farm boy from Condobolin taking a close look at his roots, his fame, his love of Australia and his family and at the trials of getting older. Most of Unbroken was recorded in the same Kings Cross studio that Shannon recorded his post-Australian Idol debut album Thatโ€™s What Iโ€™m Talking About, which went to number one in the ARIA Albums Chart in 2004 and sold more than 350,000 copies. Shannon is excited to play these new songs to his fans. โ€œIโ€™m champing at the bit to go play them live,โ€ he says. โ€œThere were a couple of years where I didnโ€™t play as much, but that has revitalised me. Iโ€™m singing better than I ever have and the band is cooking. Itโ€™s back to being lots of fun.โ€
